Australian Capital Territory (ACT)

What is the format I can have?
- Choose from black, blue or white for your letter/number colour.
- Select from white, black, brown, dark green, maroon, mid blue, pink, purple, or red, as a background colour.
- Your preferred plate can be a combination of numbers and letters, up to a maximum of 7 characters for a car.
- You have the option of using an existing slogan or creating your own.
- There are also numerous plate categories to choose from here.
How much will they cost?
Personalised plate prices start from $466.40 but they vary depending on plate category. Fees can be found here.
What are the size options?
Standard vehicle plates can be:
- 135mm x 372mm (7 characters)
- 135mm x 317 mm (5 characters)
- 135mm x 190mm (3 characters)
There are also slimline front versions of the above which are 100mm rather than 135mm.
Can I store my plates rather than fix them to my car?
Yes, but you must go to an Access Canberra shop with all plates and advise that you wish to store your plate and pay the required fee. The minimum storage time period is 2 months and the maximum is 5 years.

What do I need to do when I get my custom number plate?
If you wish to affix your plate to your vehicle, there are a numerous fitting and care instructions that can be found here. They depend on the type of plate you have ordered.
New South Wales (NSW)

What is the format I can have?
- You can order plates in a range of background colours, letters and styles of plate - everything from football teams to zodiac signs. You can browse them here.
- Personalised plates allow you to select your own letters and numbers and apply them to a set format.
- Custom plates allow you to create what you’d like with no set format.
How much will they cost?
Personalised plate prices start from $105 per year plus an order fee and custom plates start at $454 per year plus the order fee. The order fees vary across ranges.
What are the size options?
The majority of the car plates are 372mm in width and height varies by style.
What do I need in order to purchase custom/personalised plates?
- Your driver licence number.
- Your email address.
- Your chosen, new content for the plates.
- The postcode of the area where you’d like to collect your new plates from.
What do I need to do when my plates are ready to collect?
- Your number plates will often take around 21 days to be delivered to the service centre you specified for collection. You will receive a letter to notify you of this and the documentation you will need to bring.
- In order to pick up your new plates, you must surrender your old plates. You’ll need tools and screws with you if you’re collecting plates for the car you’re driving there.

Northern Territory (NT)

What is the format I can have?
- Choose from a range of different sizes and colours.
- Personalised plates are available up to 7 characters, in the following colour combinations:
- A white background with ochre characters
- A yellow background with black characters
- A white background with black characters
- Special plates are available with up to 5 or 6 characters. You can apply for the Explorer Territory series (image of the explorer John McDouall Stuart) or the Regional Series.

Personalised plate prices are available for a fee but vary depending on what you choose.
What are the size options?
Standard vehicle plates can be:
- 372mm x 133mm (6 characters with optional diamond)
- 315mm x 133mm (5 characters with optional diamond)

- 7 character plates can also be ordered in slimline or standard.
Do I have to fix my plates to my car?
Once you have been notified that your plates are available to collect, you must fit these to a current NT registered vehicle, within 12 months.

- Choose from a range of colours and sizes, and create your own letter and number combinations.
- There are numerous different formats - everything from charities, zodiac signs to NRL and cartoons. You can view the range here.

- 134mm x 372mm (standrad)
- 100mm x 372mm (slim)
- 155mm x 305mm (USA Regular)

Can I store my plates rather than fix them to my car?
Yes, you can buy plates for fun or collections. However, if you lodge your ‘remove and/or attach’ form, you must attach them to your car right away and surrender your Standard Issue plates.

What do I need to do when I get my custom number plate?
If you are replacing your plates, and the old combination is registered to your car, you simply need to attach your new plates and surrender your old ones to a Transport and Main Roads Customer Service Centre near you.
If your personalised plates are brand new, you must:
- Complete the Remove and/or Attach form and take it to the nearest Transport and Main Roads Customer Service Centre.
- Surrender your standard issue plates.
After completing the above, you can attach your new plates.

South Australia (SA)

What is the format I can have?
- Choose from a range of colours and sizes.
- For custom plates, you can select a combination of letters and numbers from 1-7 characters, but it must include 1 letter.

- For a personalised plate, there is a maximum of 6 characters and they must start with a letter, followed by numbers. For example:
- 1 letter followed by 5 numbers
- 4 letters followed by 2 numbers
- 5 letters followed by 1 number

Once there is a plate agreement in place, and you have your new plates, you must surrender your old plates (either in person or by mail) to a Service SA customer service centre.

Can I store my plates rather than fix them to my car?
Yes, you can get custom plates for fun and display purposes.
If in the future, you decide to fix them to your car, you can do. You need to visit a Service Tasmania shop, fill out an ‘Application for Replacement Plates’, (there will be a small cost for this).

If you are fixing these to your car, you must surrender your old plates to TasPlates in an envelope provided for you, or at a Service Tasmania shop. You must do this within 7 days of receiving your new plates, to avoid a potential fine.

- The combination of numbers and letters for customised plates is almost limitless.

Often approximately $395/$495 but they vary in price depending on your number of characters, series and exclusivity.
What are the size options?
- 372mm x 132mm (standard)
- 315mm x 100mm (slim – 5 characters)
- 372mm x 100mm (slim – 6 characters)
- 250mm x 100mm (slim – 3 or 4 characters)
What are custom/personalised plate contracts?
When you purchase a custom or personalised number plate, they come with an optional contract. This will allow you to retain the plates, whether they are on your vehicle or not. When you hold the contract and the plates are no longer registered, they can’t be re-issued unless you sell the contract.
What do I need to do when I get my custom number plate?
If you would like to attach your plates to your vehicle, you must call 1300 660 417 (VicRoads customer service) to have them assigned to your vehicle.
