2021 saw the year end with the average value of a scrap car at a high level, as we moved into 2022, despite decreasing slightly into the new year, prices maintain over $520. With just a 1% drop seen in January prices have been relatively stable for the last 3 months. 

January Average Scrap Car Price $522

Prices for scrap cars are up by 44% compared to January 2021. We predict that prices will maintain above $500 into February, though as always with scrap car valuations, they can change suddenly. The value of your scrap car is dependent on various factors, including the global demand for scrap metal, as well as the make, model, age, weight, condition and location of your car.

The CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index is a rolling monthly index covering the last 13 months. It's updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout Australia. We've taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, the prices show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.

Top cars scrapped in January 2022

The top model scrapped - The Holden Astra was the most frequently scrapped car at CarTakeBack recycling centres. With an average value of $492 in January and an average age of 19 years.

The top 5 makes of car scrapped - Despite the Astra being the most popular scrapped model, Toyota again took the top spot of the most common make of vehicle scrapped with CarTakeBack. There were a few changes to the other cars in the top list.
