This month we're happy to report a further increase to the scrap car prices on offer at CarTakeBack recycling centres. Month on month increases have been seen recently, following a reduction in prices during April and May due to the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The September scrap car prices increased by 4% compared to August. Prices are also up by a considerable amount, 26%, compared to September 2019, making them the highest scrap car prices we've seen during the last 12 months! It's an ideal time to sell your car for scrap and get some cash in your bank! Prices look set to maintain into next month, but with uncertain times still facing us all due to the pandemic, prices could fall.

The value of scrap cars is dependent on numerous factors, including the global demand for scrap metal, as well as the make, model, age, weight, condition and location of your car.

The CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index is a rolling monthly index covering the last 13 months. It's updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout Australia. We've taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, the prices show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.

Top cars scrapped in September 2020

This month the most common car scrapped was the Holden Astra, the average age of the Astras scrapped was 11 years and the average scrap value of a Holden Astra was $250.
